EPSRC funds new programme ‘Beyond Antibiotics’
The 5-year programme will start in October 2021.
Scientists from the Universities of Oxford, Ulster and UCL have joint forces in a multi-disciplinary team to help combat antimicrobial resistance. The group has announced they will receive major funding from EPSRC, which is part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).
‘Beyond Antibiotics,’ as the new programme is named, will start in October 2021 and is planned for five years. It will connect researchers from various areas in the Physical and Life Sciences to develop new technology with the goal of improving diagnosis as well as treatment options for bacterial infections. The programme will focus on tackling antimicrobial resistance through novel, ‘drug-free’ approaches and therefore finding alternatives to conventional therapies.
