I studied Biology and Chemistry in Berlin; did my PhD thesis in biochemistry/biophysics at the Max-Planck-Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried, Germany; post-docs at the Marine Biological Laboratory Woods Hole, MA, USA, and at the Max-Planck-Institute for Infection Biology in Berlin; became independent group leader at Hannover Medical School, Germany; and first associate (2007), then full professor (2015) at the Biozentrum in Basen, Switzerland.
