Chair for Physical Chemistry at Friedrich-Schiller University Jena & Scientific director of Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology, Jena

Jürgen Popp holds a chair for Physical Chemistry at the Friedrich-Schiller University Jena and is the scientific director of the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology, Jena. His research is predominantly focused on biophotonics. With innovative Raman techniques being his major expertise, his particular interest lies in the development of spectroscopic diagnostics and other biomedical applications. This emphasis on biomedical technology transfer is also reflected in his role as a speaker of the “InfectoGnostics Research Campus” and the Leibniz Research Alliance “Health Technologies”.

In 2012, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania and – among many other prizes for his scientific contributions – he received the prestigious Pittsburgh Spectroscopy Award in 2016.
