Kevin Lamkiewicz

Dr. Kevin Lamkiewicz is Team Lead Data Science at SMA Development GmbH in Jena, Germany, where he heads the epicinsights InnovationLab. Before transitioning to industry in 2024, he spent in academic research as a bioinformatician at Friedrich Schiller University Jena, specializing in RNA structures and virus biology – including extensive work on coronaviruses during the pandemic. At epicinsights, Kevin combines this scientific background with practical AI implementation. His team contributed to Germany’s national wastewater surveillance program AMELAG, developing spatio-temporal models that help translate raw sensor data into actionable epidemiological insights. This work reflects his core philosophy: successful diagnostics aren’t about the most sophisticated algorithms, but about solid data foundations, meaningful domain integration, and results that practitioners can trust and act upon. In his talk, he will share lessons learned from building AI systems that support – rather than replace – human expertise in diagnostic decision-making.
